Visit of the Tufa Mounds (shared flight)

Fly over the Canadian wilderness on board our Beaver DHC-2 floatplane, towards the Nahanni National Park Reserve.

Departing Watson Lake YT, our experienced pilot will fly you to Rabbitkettle Lake. This very scenic flight takes about 1h20. Upon landing on the lake, you'll be welcomed by the park crew who will further guide you to the Tufa Mounds. The walk crosses a river…but no bridge around! A boat hooked to a chain with a pulley actuated manually from either end is the only way to stay dry and access the last stretch before reaching the mounds.

The Rabbitkettle tufa mound is the largest in Canada and a key point of interest in Nahanni. Tufa mounds are created by the precipitation of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium carbonate, from thermal spring water. In Nahanni, this water retains a temperature of 20° C year-round. As the warm mineral water pours from the spring, it radiates outwards over the surface of the tufa mound. Calcium carbonate precipitates out of the spring water and hardens to form tufa. As the calcium carbonate hardens, it forms series of intricate terraces and basins known as rimstone dams and gours.

The place is sacred and we ask you to respect the area and follow directions from the park crew at all times.

This day trip costs $920+GST per person from Watson Lake (YT). The flight is confirmed - we’re offering an additional seat for a lucky visitor of the Nahanni.

Note: It’s possible to add Virginia Falls to the tour for an additional $150+tax.

1/3 open seats left!
